Louis Comfort Tiffany, Tiffany Studios, New York

Resurrection window above the high altar.

On February 28, 1904, the first memorial window installed at Christ Church was the Resurrection window above the high altar. The Resurrection window was created at the Tiffany studio and designed by Frederick Wilson. The window was dedicated to the memory of Anita Ludlam DeBost, a popular young woman whose death from typhoid fever in July, 1901 — on the eve of a trip to Paris to buy her wedding outfit — stunned and saddened the New Brighton community. Choirboys unveiled the window; Dr. Crowder (the Rector) read aloud its inscription: "I am the Resurrection and the Life/To the Glory of God and in memory of Anna Ludlam DeBost, 1877 - 1901/Blessed are the Pure in Heart, for they shall see God."

When this window was installed, the reredos shown in the bottom of the picture was not yet in place (there was a much simpler and smaller wainscoting). The French Limestone reredos was designed by Congdon and first used at Easter, 1908. It partially covers the bottom of the window (you can't read the inscription without some difficulty).

Center Panel
The center panel of the Resurrection window.

The center panel of the window shows Christ rising from the tomb. The view is different from what we normally think of, the thought of the stone rolled to one side and the empty tomb. This tomb is the shape of a modern box-like tomb. Oh well. It's still a spectacular window.

This window is on a wall that faces due west. Normally the light shining through this window has a sort of golden hue. But when the afternoon sun shines through this window in full force, the church is filled with a bright glowing light that is mainly blue with golden edges. You have to see it to fully appreciate the effect. They really knew what they were doing when they designed and built these windows.

Outer Panels
The Resurrection window's left outer panel.
The Resurrection window's right outer panel.

The two outer panels of the Resurrection window each contain an angel and a soldier. In the left panel, the soldier is on his left knee with a lantern in his right hand and shield in his left, which he is cowering behind as he stares up at the risen Christ. A tall, golden-haired angel with upswept wings towers over the soldier, facing Christ, with his hands crossed over his breast.

In the right outer panel the soldier is carrying a spear in his right hand, which he is using as a support as he kneels before the risen Christ, with his left hand rising up toward his face as if in astonishment. The golden-haired angel looming behind the soldier also has upswept wings and has his hands in a praying position at his waist.
